Huck Finn Theme Project

Since I’ve had several questions, I thought it would be easiest to put all of the information here.

You have a Huck Finn Theme Project due soon. I’m going to move the due date to Monday, 3/2, just to give you the weekend to make sure you get everything finished up. Make sure that you submit the digital version of your paper to Turnitin.com by Sunday night, 3/1, at midnight. You will also turn in the paper copy when you come to class on Monday. Here is a copy of the assignment for the regular English 10 Huck Finn Theme Project and for the English 10 Honors Huck Finn Theme Project.

The basic assignment is the same, regardless of class. (The Honors class will just be working on all 12 themes rather than choosing 6.)

You should set up your paper in MLA format (Times New Roman, size 12, 1″ margins, MLA heading at the top left of the first page, last name and page numbers on second and subsequent pages). You will have a Works Cited page as your last page. The only citation that you will have on it will be a citation for your version of the novel. (You will not use any other reference. ALL analysis should come from you, so the only source you will need for this will be your version of the novel.)

You can set up the body of your paper in a number of ways. If you’d like, you can number your paragraphs:
1. Freedom
In the scene where Huck…

You can just refer to the passage or you can use a direct quote:
1. Man vs. Self
In the scene where Huck is arguing…

OR

1. Man vs. Self
“My conscience got to stirring me up hotter than ever” (91).
In this scene, Huck…

If you include a direct quote like in that last example, you must include the page number in an in-text citation. Since the only reference you’re allowed to use for this project is the novel itself, then you just need to include the page number.

In the paragraph about each theme, you’ll explain what happened in the scene and explain how that is an example of the particular theme. Again, this analysis must come from you. Do NOT copy/paste or even paraphrase this information from the internet or from any other source. That violates the rules of the assignment and will earn you a 0 for the project, as well as open you up to other penalties in accordance with our Veritas Academic Honesty policy.

Your final page will be a Works Cited page. (EVERYONE needs to include this.) It should have Works Cited centered at the top of the page. There will be only one citation–the citation for your version of the novel.

As I said above, by midnight on Sunday (3/1) or before, you need to upload a digital version of this project to Turnitin.com. You should be registering your account to Turnitin.com today in class.  You must upload a digital version to Turnitin.com AND turn in the printed copy of your paper, too, in order for your paper to be graded.

If you have any questions about this assignment, please feel free to come and see me during tutorials. I’m here every day and I’m happy to help!
