2016-17 Week 2 — August 22

Welcome back! Last week was a busy whirlwind of returning to school, but this is the week where we’ll get down to brass tacks and (hopefully) get into a rhythm. So far, I’m super impressed with how the 10 minutes of reading time is going each day, so let’s keep working on that. If you feel inspired to share what you’re reading with the class, please feel free–that’s how I find the best books!

I meant to print this for you last week, and now the copier is having issues, but I’ll print an Independent Reading Permission Letter for y’all as soon as the copier is fixed. For now, here is the digital version: Eng11-ReadingPermissionContract. Basically, this letter explains some of the many benefits of an individual reading program and explains why giving students choice in their reading material is beneficial. It also explains that, as a rule, I don’t censor what students read (unless the parents request that). This week, though, I’ll start conferencing with students every day during our independent reading time, and one of the things that I’ll be doing during that time is checking with students who may be reading things with heavy topics so that I can offer guidance, etc. I’ll talk about this further tonight at the High School Open House. 🙂

Let’s take a look at what’s coming up this week. I’ll do a list for English 11 (American Lit II) and one for AP Language & Composition. Make sure that you’re checking the correct list! 🙂
